Kinja'd!!!

I have been looking for a Roof Rack for over a year for my GX470 and wanted something modular with the ability of adjusting with needs and so on. A nd while there are some options out there, it is very meh. This also allows for some T hule attachments which I already have a few.

I really like the options it gives and the easy of adding lights and keeping it clean. I cant find a price but I dont expect it to be cheap. $1100 to $1500? more?

Just want Oppos opinion as i’m tired of the FP “ oh its going to be on Mall crawlers” and such

Personally I’d rock an 80/20 rack before I shelled out a grand or more for a proprietary system. As it is on my GX I fab’d up some cross rails for the carrier, and the same mounts bolt to my roof rack when I want it to. Which is angle iron, C channel and expanded metal

I expect the price to be inline with other flat racks that use a proprietary accessory system. Buy in on the flat rack with the mount will be typical ARB/Rhino/Bajarack type pricing, and the accessories will be crazy prices.

That said, I like the looks of this rack. A nice low platform with lots of modular accessories, and what I’m sure will be high quality, coming from ARB. With my dog potentially becoming a more frequent traveler with the fam, I can definitely see a rack in my future.

Having never used one, I can confidently say I love it and you should defi nitely buy 5 of them.

And I will be honest as I have the ability to make my own as well. I have thought of ways to do the exact thing with my MIG welder but having the slats movable and would be out of steel . I would assume it would be but a fraction of the price of the ARB.

A nd had forgot about 80/20, that would be a good starting point and at basically an 1.5" (40mm) or 1" (25mm) it i s fairly low profile

Sounds reasonable. A Penta- Decker roof rack

Well, you’ve got my 2 cents on it.  I think there are a lot of good racks out there, but this one looks like it solves the problems I have with them.  Im not down with the idea of a $1000+ for a rack...but thats just the cost unless I want to do it on my own.  Right now I have 4 inches of clearance at my downtown work garage with my rack OFF.  If I ever go back to driving to work I will need a rack that is no more than 3 inches tall off the roof.  Its a big ask, but this might just be it.

I mean it looks awesome, but I go the cheap route with everything but the bars that attach to the car (if they contact the paint) if not I go cheap on them too.

I have racks on both the Alltrack and Forester pretty much all the time. I have a gutter rack for the 02 (that I’m building a fancy wood “deck” for) that I use only for a surfboad.

I have decent ROLA brand cross bars on the Forester. The car is a base 6mt so no pre installed side rails. The bars I have are the ones that screw into the pre existing holes on the roof and don’t actually contact the paint.

All of our trays/accessories are junk. An 18 cubic foot blow molded clamshell, and two $40 bike trays.

Since you’ve already got all of the Thule accessories you need. I guess could see going big money on a fancy base system particularly on your lex.

Stock housings, tore apart and painted the shroud satin black, replaced projectors with Morimoto D2s 4.0 3" HID projectors.  GXOR member makes a bolt-in bracket for them now

I was determined to paint mine, but it never happened. I’d really like to swap out the mounting hardware. The u-bolts are terrible. I was looking into the Yakima quick-clamps and came across this: https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Yakima/Y8870084.html

Oh I 100% expect them to charge an arm and leg but it was nice to see they were friendly to other attachments like Thule

The Low platform is a nice touch and as hammer brought up, I have been fairly close with parking garages and would be nice to not have that worry. And it being ARB I would never worry about it.

I’m sure it’s perfectly fine for what it is. Not a fan of the concept though. If you’re only using the rack for a single big option like a tent, a cheaper and simpler option is probably better. Otherwise, either pack all of your stuff inside the vehicle, bring less stuff, or get something bigger. Not a fan of having a bazillion things strapped to the outside.

Ohh that brings up a good point I had forgotten about. I dont frequent Parking garages but I do when I go downtown in the arena district (well when there was sports....) . And having to worry about height would be annoying. I know I am super close as well.

And one thing you brought up in the FP post was wind noise. If they have already worked on that aspect of wind noise, I will probably never have access to a wind tunnel and any home made rack could have the potential to howl

Yeah mine were fogged, but a wet sand 800-1000-1500 with 2k clear took care of it

the main thing, as they say in the video, is the gap between rack and roof, and it looks like, for the 80 series at least, they make a special piece.

Thats what i have been thinking and HammerheadFistpunch   has brought up some good points. With a low profile rack like this there is less of a chance on scraping on parking garages, which I dont frequent but when sports are back, thats all downtown Cbus has.

Also he brought up wind noise. ARB has already done testing and any home made rack could sound like a locomotive whistle.

I assume the stock rack will have to come off and probably will touch the paint? M aybe will have to look tonight.

And the wooden deck sounds cool. Assuming going for a more of a vintage kind of look?

And I think this is the current J 150 as they show in the video having something at least under the rack. So hopefully there is something for the J120s

All I know is that I have bucketloads of parts to buy for the Mustang. ARB doesn’t need to be tempting me with this cool roof rack! Must not buy parts for 4Runner!

The light but stiffness of aluminum appeals to me for my AMC Eagle, as does the rear roller. I’ve looked but can’t find how they mount yet. Wonder how hard it would be to adapt to mount onto t-nuts to use the existing rails on the car... I mean I guess I COULD add a bolt wherever I need it if I got creative...I’ve been considering swapping the flimsy factory bars to Yak/Thl but this might be better. I’m already pushing a non-aerodynamic brick around, what’s a little more. And the potential tight fit is an added bonus. I do expect this to be “ARB priced” though. TBD, but I’m also guessing over $1K USD.
